Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

Our team rescued 14 individuals stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing were halted on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing tropical storms stronger and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause approximately millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
