As any prominent awards ceremony draws close, one notices a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- Another imaginative release missed out that year
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
- Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
